The Harry Griffin 2,000 Footers

And in the darkest hours of urban depression I will sometimes take out that dog's-eared map and dream a while of more spacious days; and
perhaps a dried blade of grass will fall out of it to remind me that I was once a free man on the hills...

A.H.Sidgwick 1912

Its fair to say that I've had my fair share of prods from friends who would ask me what did I have planned for the year as each answer would yield 'nothing' I just want to enjoy my fell walking and I guess that is what I have been doing since completing my Wainwrights back in 2011

This however all changed the moment I picked up a copy of Freeman of the Hills written by A.H Griffin back in 1978. For those of you who are not aware Harry Griffin was a writer turned reporter for the Manchester Guardian who was born in what was then the ship building town Barrow in Furness. Harry Griffin wasn't just a writer as his main passion was rock climbing who by the 1930's had become a prolific accomplished explorer of Lakeland.

During the summer of 1977 Harry, aged 63, chose to revisit all the Lakeland Fells that exceeded 2,000 ft - he then categorised them into sections splitting the summits into 27 routes which took him until the end of 1977 to complete.

Harry himself was a honourable gentlemen who never left anything out of his walks, which on a much smaller scale I can adear to as I to like to be as honest & true when I also write about my own experiences on the fells. After reading his book I had made my mind up that I would take on the challenge of completing all 203 - 2,000 footers, but first I had to syphon the routes between the lines that Harry had written as his book was a about his experience of his time spent & not a guide book.

This meant reading the book many times.

It didn't take long after reading the book, on which I would focus on sections rather than the book 'as a whole', to put all 27 routes together. Although, as Harry admitted, he made some observational errors; this is something that at first I thought  I may also have to do if I was to stay true to the routes, yet after reading the book over & over I soon learned that Harry was just too honest to leave his mistakes out, which then prompted me to re-jig a few of Harry's mastered routes ever so slightly.

I really haven't put a time scale on how long these routes will take me, if I'm honest and if everything goes to plan I'm hoping to have them completed by Autumn 2015 but in my heart of hearts I know that this is unrealistic due to the nature of the Lakeland weather, even during summertime.

This page is dedicated to all the 2,000 ft Lakeland Fells, I hope that you enjoy reading them as much as I will walking them.
