Great Carrs

Overview
Height: 2,558 Feet - 780 Metres
Grid Ref: NY 271 009
Area: Southern
Group: S/CON
Ordnance Survey: OL6
Wainwright Guidebook: Four

Curved like a scythe, the shapely ridge springing form the fields of Little Langdale to the crest of Rough Crags and climbing gradually thence along the grassy rim of Wet Side Edge to a lofty altitude between deep valleys, has little to arouse interest until the mild excitement of boundary stairway skirting the edge of crags promise better things ahead.

The Memorial of the British Halifax Mk V Bomber which crashed here after hitting the steep crags over Broad Slack during bad weather in October 1944 All eight crew members including seven Canadians and one Scotsman the youngest of which was just nineteen years of age died instantly.

The undercarriage still remains along side the Memorial parts of which still bear the part numbers as clear as if you were looking at them on the shelf whereas one of the Rolls Royce Merlin engines was recovered and remains at the Ruskin Museum in Coniston.
