It feels like ages since my last visit to Great Hill on the West Pennine Moors and seeing as I had a couple of spare hours this afternoon I thought there was no better time to revisit.
Looking back on Winter Hill from Spitlers Edge.
That's the parking area below Hordern Stoops and Moor Bottom a steep, and direct route on to Winter Hill summit, in all my visits funnily enough I've never made an ascent from this direction.

The path descends slightly before I join Redmond's Edge and the welcome stretch of stone slabs.

There's plenty of time to enjoy the wild heather before it reaches its peak.

Great Hill summit.
Its a good two miles from the parking area to reach the summit and today it took me just under the hour mark and in that time I've only seen three people including the woman sitting down in the cross shelter.

Many of the slabs were submerged under bog water some shallow, but many hidden beneath dark, still pools. Down here in Lancashire, to tackle the problem someone had planted wooden stakes and roped them together to guide walkers through. Not a fix, but definitely a solution.

The distant white structure seen centre right is Deepdale Stadium which is only a two minute drive from where I work.

Well that was a brilliant two hours spent wondering the moorland seeing the subtle changes of Autumn arrival in the heather and in the air.
