Travellers north over the main road over Dunmail Raise are accomapied on the west side soon after leaving Town Head, Grasmere, by a rising ridge of rough fell overlooking the Pass itself and then falls abrubtly to valley-level before Thirlemere is eached. This familier height is Steel Fell.
